Corporate Social Responsibility

As an organization, SABIC recently launched our UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) Roadmap, identifying the ten SDGs most connected to our business, representing opportunities for SABIC to make the greatest impact.

Corporate social responsibility

SABIC has a well-developed strong Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) policy, with the aim to build healthy and resilient communities. We provide financial and societal benefit to our communities through employment, direct and indirect economic stimulation from our business activities, as well as charitable giving and social responsibility initiatives.

There are four priority focus areas through our global CSR policy, these are:

  • Health and wellness
  • Science and technology education
  • Environmental protection
  • Community giving

All potential CSR initiatives are evaluated according to RAISE criteria: Reputation, Audience, Innovation, Strategy and Endurance. Our annual programme of activity is planned in January to encompass the remainder of the year. SABIC give priority to those communities nearest to our operational sites at Redcar and North Tees and the activities that fit within our focus areas and policies.

Environmental Protection

SABIC became one of the founding members of the UK Plastic Pact, a world-first initiative that aims to transform the plastic packaging system in the UK, to keep plastics in the economy and out of the environment.

SABIC are also voluntary members of Operation Clean Sweep (OCS)  and are founding members of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste.

Locally, SABIC also support marine waste activities; funding clean-up equipment and taking part in beach cleans. SABIC also made a significant multi-million pound contribution to support the Environment Agency with the award-winning flood defence scheme at Greatham Creek and annually provide over £80,000 worth of water which is pumped on demand to the RSPB Saltholme wildlife reserve from our North Tees site.

Science and Technology Education

SABIC’s Education Liaison team consists of a number of volunteers who actively go into schools and colleges to talk about careers, chemistry and the circular economy.  They have previously hosted summer schools for undergraduates and budding engineers and supported the National Citizen Service project and High Tide Foundation.

Health and wellness

SABIC's ongoing efforts to improve health and well-being programs have been recognized with awards at the Better Health at Work award annual ceremony including earning “ambassador” status, the highest available award, and the “continuing excellence” standard.
